Several years ago now, when I lived in Calgary, I worked in the art department of a screen printing shop. These are a few examples of the work I did there. It was a good job, creative work, great people, and occasionally free beer!

Bouncing Balls in the THIRD DIMENSION!!!

I am currently taking a class in 3Ds Max. I actually took the class before but that was several years ago and I didn't find it very helpful. This one hopefully will be better. We started with a bouncing ball. Here is mine.

So I've been meaning to try my hand at digital painting. I watched a few tutorials on you tube that were really helpful and fairly easy to follow. I have to keep practicing to get better but here's a work in progress...

Next time I might use some photos for reference just for practice sake.

Two things

A quick sketch of Viggo Mortensen in The Road. I love Viggo, but The Road is hard to watch. It's very bleak. Well done, but bleak. Although, in my heart, he will always be Aragorn to me.

Some time ago, I sent some of my comics to Jeffrey Brown, one of my favourite cartoonists and graphic novelists. This postcard was his response. It was encouraging to have a positive response from someone I admire.

Pet Project

So I haven't drawn these guys for a couple weeks. I'm still working on a project that involves them. I think a comic book would be the right format, but I know my story is way too sweeping and epic for my comic-making skills as of now. So, for the time being, I'll just keep refining their designs and storyline. The project may never come to fruition, but it's fun to delve into the world I created for them every now and then.

Jumping on the Mad Men Bandwagon

So with Mad Men winning a third Emmy, I wanted to see what I've been missing out on.

I kept hearing all the the hype about it and finally rented the first DVD on Netflix. Unfortunately they don't have it available for streaming or I might have watched more. The first disc only has three episodes and so far so good. I don't think I'm in obsessed with it just yet but I'm sure as the show progresses, the more intriguing it will be.

Here are a few quick portrait sketches I did from the show.



Mad Men is set in the 1960s so there are a lot of quirks in the show that are funny to me especially instances which involve smoking. In general there is A LOT of smoking in the show. In fact I think most scenes start with one of the characters lighting up a cigarette. A couple of spots that struck me as especially funny were these (these are more stylized):






The first one is when one of the characters goes to a gynecologist and one of the first things the doctor does, before examining the patient, is light up a cigarette.

The second one is obvious.

I know this is typical of the time period but it still caught me off guard.

Anyone else watch this show? Does it get even better?

I'm back!

After a wonderful and much needed vacation to Walt Disney World, I am now back. While I did not have much time for drawing (hitting all the Disney parks and Universal studios kept us busy), I have returned refreshed and inspired. Today, I give you a page from my sketchbook featuring Stitch, Hogwarts Stitch, and a cowboy.

With my parents, uncle, and brother all in town, I haven't had much time to work on my animation. That post will have to wait until next week. For now, I got some pages from my sketchbook. Lately, I've been inspired by the book, Keys to Drawing With Imagination, by Bert Dodson:


It's a really good book for getting the creative juices flowing, so I'd suggest checking it out if you get the chance.

Slot Machine

Due to the fact that I stare at slot machines all day and I have recently applied to a company that designs them, I got the idea to design and and program my own slot machine. Or I should say a slot machine parody. I haven't come up with a witty name yet but it is based in politics and lobbyists. I did come up with the tag line "You win, America loses!"

Anyway, you win if you line up several of the same lobbyists in a row. If you win a lot I am thinking of having some sweet animation like the NRA guy will toss a bag of money up in the air and then shoot it.

Below are some rough ideas of what the lobbyist panels will look like. For some reason, I think environmentalists and nudist are one in the same. I need to figure out a way to incorporate money in each one. Also I need to come up with one for Pharmaceutical/medical, religious, and AARP. I think that covers enough different things.

Las Vegas and Amazon Contest

I'm off to Las Vegas for a wedding so I didn't get a chance to create something new but here's something I did for the wedding.

It's a label that goes on the gift bags thanking everyone for coming to the wedding.



I also uploaded onto YouTube a contest submission. A while ago Amazon had a contest to create a commercial for them and I submitted this:




I didn't win but this was one of the first animation pieces that I worked on after graduating from Vanarts that wasn't work-related. I was pretty proud of it! =) It's simple and not a lot of animation but I was happy with how it came out.

I'm sure you guys have seen it. It's pretty good so I'm not sad to have lost to it.

quick art update and what bothers me.

Random accomplishment: I watched over 6 hrs of anime this weekend!...after my procrastination of choosing a title to watch, I decided to pick something I don't have any know about, and I sat through the whole thing XD....it was cute, and some of it made me feel so bad for their realistic situations that I felt a tear or two, but it's all fine.
Kita-He, and Memories of Off ova's 1, 2 and 3.5. They were short, but enjoyable.


Anyways, to more serious accomplishments....

In light of all the lost 2 year Ive had since I left college, I have good news art-wise. I am in a artist mentorship program :). As much as I am intimidated by meetings, I am also rather excited...


I have felt a bit more inspired because of this......I honestly did not know I'd get picked among the entries...I was so worried, almost wanted to tell myself to not be excited...but now that it's going through, I hope by mentioning it, it's still happening....why? because everytime I mention things that arent official yet, they seem to not happen after :(...I'm not even kidding...it's as if, I have a constant "do not take for granted" voice, you know? like something, or someone is trying to keep you on your toes, and that the best things are things not expected, because we appreciate them more.....but sometimes, I wish it was a little more lenient...I tend to think of terrible things that will happen when important things do not work out :(....it might be part of my mix of anxiety disorder, and, another related...but I experience some of the shortcomings enough to think its not just in my head.

I forgot if I mentioned it before, but I have met my mentor, and she is a nice lady. I can share her art with you later...it seems like something I could really be inspired by, and best of all, she does human anatomy work XD...I need.
Um...I hope I do quite fine in the presentation meeting, a bit nervous.
a doubt we are sharing is if the life drawing classes we have plans for is still happening.

I managed to digitally paint a landscape off a photo I took. I planned to do that for a long time....not really sure why I didn't....procrastinating, I guess..........yeah....

This is Victoria, BC. I visited this area with my best friend in BC...I want to move back next summer :(.


I also added random edits to it, because having my own landscape art means endless background usage for whatever comes to my mind.

If you look close enough, there is a small spirit of a dragon. Though really, I just added a filter and made the transparency low, I drew this dragon originally like 3 years ago, haha.

I thought I'd try out a matte/border look. I don't think I can really afford to do that fancy matting without photoshop. the image file however is far too small to bother matting in a frame....I worked small so I could get it done without my photoshop lagging. Trust me, if I do not finish it within 2 days that it's started, I probably won't even do anything on it for at least a few months.


There is also something that comes to mind from time to time, awhile people are either for or against it....there is nothing wrong with sharing my view on this:
sit through it if you wish, I won't force you.

"One of my biggest peeves, is how people are so foolish related to the environment. I do not comprehend how it is not your problem. Seriously. Everyday things die off, including things that support your ability to live. Everything is basically your life support on Earth, and if the trees die, you will die too......that silly "we can just find another planet" idea is also stupid. What if you can't just do that? do all the billions of creatures who died because of you die just so you can run away again?....your just going to do it again, anyway. There is no true word to express the disgust in the severity of the arrogance that seems to be the image of mankind...and everyday we see living examples of it...how can you not feel shame? we were built with shame for a good reason, thinking that we should never feel shame is self-justifying for ignorance. Sometimes I feel it is futile to open this subject, because I feel like I will get things thrown at me...but than I feel no better than anyone else when I sit and say nothing, as if I do not care...because I do care. My apathy is towards people who make it difficult to express myself without being shot down for "caring too much". I still think I can be a terrible person with flaws I am not proud of...and still, I care about what is important."

I'm sorry if nobody wanted something like that on here, but I didn't really have much else. I admit it is was far too long of a paragraph though, might be my horrible grammar skills XD.

Besides that, I'm going to prince albert tomorrow to help out with their Walmart inventory...apparently that town has a crappy walmart with a low staff...but I'm just going for something different...I'm quite a deprived child who takes any sort of road trip as if she hasn't gone anywhere before XD, I'm not supposed to be excited, but at the same time, I'm afraid of road trips some days.

Did you know Saskatoon has a Kendo club? XD....seriously. I want to muster up the courage to go, but I'm not sure. Also, is the money.

Eep, I have a headache...my fault, it's pretty late.

:( Also......I am feeling disturbed over a movie I saw on friday...I mean, it's still bothering me, there are times when I wish my friends would sleep over, but I want to hide that feeling because I'm an adult now(and I have no roomate, with a highly active imagination). Some things are easily forgotten as a movie by some people............I wish it was so easy for me..............I will never see a movie like that again.....I need to not think about this....happy thoughts I must have, till next update, I guess...I still get the odd shudder still :( .

A new anime short series to span over movies, with one of the prettiest singers you'll ever hear for an opening song, period. I do not often praise a singer unless I really enjoy them beyond others I "like"...if you are interested in her other work, her name is Kokia.

I also want to see this anime series, but that's besides the point :p. I must sell the non-anime watchers with the music XD..I will not share something if I cannot see others liking some aspect of it.

Also, there is news of a werewolf anime series titled Guardians of Luna. The creator of Gargoyles that I know you are all familiar with is co-creating it with a team in Tokyo. No there are no vampires in this anime...I am very relieved. There is an interview onyoutube, go look it up :).

Technically it is not anime because of the american influence, but it is being worked on in Japan, so...it's more anime than the Last Airbender has rights to call itself XD. Although, one thing that confuses me: there is a dragon shown. I do not understand how the dragon really fits, but I won't complain :).

I too am working on updating my demo reel. I have bunch of ideas for short films--some simple, some complex. And since they've just been sitting dormant in my Ideas folder, I figured it was time to dust off my skills and turn those ideas into ANIMATION!!

Since I haven't done much animation in a while, I decided to start off with a fairly simple idea: An intrepid hunter named Fred brings home quite the prize.

Below is my storyreel. My reels tend to be pretty ruff, but they work for me:

By the way, I removed the "prize" from this version. I want to hear your guesses as to what it could possibly be. I bet a signed copy of my demo reel you won't get it right!

So there you go...that's what I've been working on. I'd like to be done with it in another two weeks. This is more of a warm-up. And yes, that is the working title. I haven't spent time coming up with a more clever title. Something with a pun....

.An Inglorious Battle

I have been doing nothing for the past few days other than watching Star Trek and battling to update my portfolio. I know it isn't very creative and therefore not terribly worthy of this blog but I'll be damned if I'll take any criticism for that.

I have not been as diligent as I should have been in the job hunt and have been slacking on keeping things up. So when Gerard sent me a link to a job post he thought I would be a good fit, I now have the difficult task of getting my act together.

First I battled with video editing software, finally being defeat enough to resort to Windows Movie Maker. *shudders* Then I had to wait all night for my newly minted demo reel to upload to YouTube. I was going to make a nice website to post the various things I needed to post, but apparently I lost all knowledge of html (I think I replaced it with blackjack basic strategy! Remember! Split fours against a five or a six!) and couldn't find a good website editor. Finally I resorted to a blogspot after wordpress didn't give me the desired result.

Now all I need to do is rewrite my resume and write a cover letter... *sigh!*

Soo...ironically (or possibly creepy) my post has something to do with watercolors too.

A while back Clint posted on his blog a link to Nick Tay's work. I really loved how he played with color against the charcoal drawings. Even the ones the were just a spot of color on the entire page. I thought his drawings were beautiful and brilliant. I was so inspired that I wanted to do some watercolors as well.

I was doodling at work and thought that these would make great ink and watercolor pieces.




I picked up some watercolors at A.C.Moore and started experimenting a little bit. These were my first tries.



These didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted but I am just starting out with these. It's really tough to get a certain kind of sophisticated control with watercolors. At least I think so.

Anyway, since I wasn't having too much luck with the inked pieces, I decided to just play around with the colors and textures for now until I got a better handle on the medium. This is what I came up with.



I think I like watercolors. The cleanup is definitely easier compared to acrylic or oil paints.
